Valam - Feeding

Feeding an animal in need is a deeply fulfilling act, it nourishes not just their body, but the shared bond of compassion that reminds us why this work matters.

Valam is PAWS’ food and feeding programme, created around one simple but deeply meaningful act: nourishing an animal in need. For many street and shelter animals, a timely, nutritious meal is the difference between survival and suffering. Through Valam, we invite individuals, families, and groups to take part in this profoundly fulfilling act of care.

At present, due to capacity constraints, we are able to accept only injured or diseased animals and are not in a position to take in stray dogs/cats or pups/kittens

Feeding the Hungry is Fulfillment

Valam – Feed with Love, Nurture with Purpose

Food bring comfort, stability, and visible relief to an animal that has known hunger or uncertainty. It is often in these moments that people form their strongest emotional connection with animal welfare.

The programme allows supporters to actively participate in feeding and nurturing animals under the guidance of the PAWS team, ensuring that nutrition is appropriate, hygienic, and aligned with each animal’s needs. Whether it is a shy street dog eating cautiously, a recovering shelter dog regaining strength, or a gentle cat learning to feel safe again, Valam creates moments of shared humanity and compassion.

Valam is especially meaningful for those who wish to contribute in a hands-on way—celebrating a birthday, marking a personal milestone, teaching children empathy, or simply giving back. Every meal served through this programme carries dignity, care, and intention.

At its heart, Valam reminds us that feeding a hungry animal feeds something within us too—a sense of purpose, kindness, and connection that lingers long after the meal is over.

Feeding Street Animals – Compassion Where It Is Needed Most

For countless street animals, the search for food is a daily struggle marked by uncertainty, competition, and risk. PAWS’ street animal feeding programme exists to bring consistency, dignity, and care into these fragile lives by ensuring that animals living on the streets receive regular, nutritious meals in a safe and humane manner.

Feeding a street animal is an act of quiet courage and deep compassion. It requires patience, sensitivity, and respect for the animal’s space and experience. Through this programme, participants witness the transformative power of something simple yet vital—how a hungry dog softens, how trust begins to replace fear, and how survival slowly gives way to stability.

PAWS works closely with experienced feeders and volunteers to ensure that feeding is carried out responsibly, hygienically, and without causing disruption or conflict. Meals are provided at appropriate locations and times, helping animals develop routine and reducing stress, aggression, and scavenging-related injuries.

Participants in the street feeding programme often describe it as grounding and profoundly fulfilling. It is a chance to care for animals exactly where they are, without removing them from their familiar territories, and to support coexistence between communities and street animals.

At its core, street feeding is about acknowledging shared spaces and shared responsibility. Each meal offered on the street is a reminder that kindness does not need walls or enclosures—it only needs willingness, empathy, and consistency.

Every day, our shelter serves 500+ freshly prepared, high-quality nutritious meals to dogs under our care. For many of them, this is the first time they experience consistent, balanced nutrition—an essential foundation for recovery, immunity, and overall well-being.

Our feeding program is designed with both compassion and clinical insight. Meals are thoughtfully planned to meet the dietary needs of dogs recovering from injury, illness, surgery, or long-term neglect. We focus on digestibility, adequate protein, essential nutrients, and portion control, ensuring that each dog receives food appropriate to their age, health condition, and activity level.

Beyond physical nourishment, feeding time is also about care, dignity, and routine. Regular meals help reduce stress, support faster healing, and restore trust in animals that have known hunger and hardship. For dogs undergoing treatment or post-operative recovery, proper nutrition directly impacts outcomes and quality of life.

This program runs every single day, without interruption, and is a core part of our commitment to humane sheltering. By feeding over 500 dogs daily, we are not just filling bowls, we are rebuilding strength, resilience, and hope, one meal at a time.
